High School Baseball Playoffs - Monday Highlights

Eight Pine Belt area teams were in action on Monday night in the MHSAA baseball playoffs. Here's a look at the playoff picture following Monday's action:

MAIS

Columbia Academy visits Manchester Academy on Tuesday in the first round.

Class 1A

Monday: Lumberton (3) French Camp (5)

  • Lumberton is eliminated from the playoffs.

Monday: Stringer swept Sebastopol to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

Class 2A

Taylorsville swept Puckett over the weekend. The Tartars face Clarkdale in the second round.

Monday: Mize (2) Lake (8)

  • Mize is eliminated from the playoffs.

Monday: Richton (9) Pisgah (8)

  • Richton advances to face Enterprise-Clarke in the second round.

Class 3A

Monday: Seminary (6) Magee (3)

  • Seminary advances to the second round.

Monday: West Marion (4) Morton (3)

  • West Marion advances to the second round.

Monday: Perry Central (3) St. Andrew’s (4)

  • Perry Central is eliminated from the playoffs.

Class 4A

Saturday: Northeast Jones (4) Greene County (0)

  • Northeast Jones advances to the second round.

Saturday: Sumrall (9) Mendenhall (2)

  • Sumrall advances to play East Central in the second round.

Class 5A

Saturday: Wayne County (11) Natchez (4)

  • Wayne County advances to play West Harrison in the second round.

South Jones swept Picayune over the weekend. The Braves advance to face Hattiesburg in the second round.

Monday: Pearl River Central (7) Pascagoula (1)

  • Pearl River Central advances to face West Jones in the second round.

Class 6A

Saturday: Petal (11) Terry (1)

  • Petal advances to play Gulfport in the second round.

Oak Grove plays George County in the second round.

    It didn’t take long for Nick Sandlin to capture another award following his return to the mound for USM. The junior was named Conference USA pitcher of the week and a Collegiate Baseball player of the week for the third time this season. Sandlin pitched 12 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in five innings of USM’s 8-0 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Junior Adam Jackson is expected to take the mound on Tuesday night when the Golden Eagles host South Alabama.

    Though soft-spoken, Steven Anderson hits hard. A "violent" runner as Southern Miss teammate Keon Howard describes him, perhaps Anderson is making up for all those years spent at quarterback. "Steven runs like he doesn't want to be hit no more,” Howard said.

    William Carey swept Brewton-Parker on Monday to wrap up the regular season. The No. 12 Lady Crusaders finish the year 33-13 (19-9 SSAC) and await their seeding in the Southern States Athletic Conference which begins on May 2.
