JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Jasper County sheriffs and surrounding police departments received a gift from area churches to help  keep them safe.

High velocity bullet proof vests were donated to Jasper County Sheriff's Department, Bay Springs police, Heidelberg police, and Louin police.

"It is amazing how much support we receive from the citizens of Jasper County," said Sheriff Randy Johnson. "We will never be able to repay the kindness that has been bestowed upon us."

The idea started with Tony Johnson, Pastor of Moss First Baptist Church, and his congregation.

As word spread, 17 other churches, the Jasper County Baptist Association, and private citizens donated and raised enough money to buy every officer a vest.
