HAHH dedicates first home in Laurel

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity has dedicated its first home in Jones County.

A ribbon was cut Saturday morning for the Pickering family home on North 9th Avenue in Laurel.

During a ceremony, homeowner Diana Pickering was presented a Bible and an American Flag, before being handed the keys to her home.

Habitat for Humanity helps deserving families get a home of their own, with the help of lots of volunteers.

"It feels awesome, it's a blessing to be a homeowner, to not struggle with rent anymore, to have your own home," Pickering said.

"Leadership Jones County did the major fundraising for this build, so they raised 75 percent of the cost of this home and they brought a lot of in-kind sponsors to the table, which made this build possible," said Laura Goodwin-Wright, finance, resource development and communications manager for the Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity.

The Pickering home is the 65th dedicated by the Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity, which was organized in 1990.
