HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of Pine Belt residents spent Earth Day on Saturday by properly disposing of hazardous household waste that could harm the environment.
They brought old tires, paints and solvents, E-waste and other products to the Bobby Chain Airport in Hattiesburg and the Lamar County Multi-Purpose Center for the "Right Way to Throw Away Day."
Hattiesburg, Petal, Forrest and Lamar counties, the University of Southern Mississippi, William Carey University, the Pine Belt Regional Sold Waste Authority and the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality sponsored the event.
An environmental services company collected the items.
"This is an opportunity for people to take their things that they don't know how to throw away and put them in the hands of people who do know how to get of them, so that we don't have white goods in our streams, we don't have chemicals going into our ground and our groundwater," said Ginger Maddox, manager of the Planning Division for the City of Hattiesburg
More than three hundred residents dropped off items at the Chain Airport.
