ELLISVILLE- Continuing a sixteen-year tradition, Jones County Junior College's "JC Jazz Cats," along with JC Voices will present "Java and Jazz" on Thursday, April 20, at 7 p.m. in the Bobby Shows Exhibit Hall of the Ronald E. Whitehead Advanced Technology Center in Ellisville. This concert will feature the JC Jazz Cats under the direction of Lucas Brust, and Fine Arts Division Chair, Dr. Susan Smith will be directing the JC Voices ensemble.
The jazz band will perform musical selections comprised of a few of the more common "standards" in the jazz repertoire. Ranging across several decades of the evolution of jazz, these memorable melodies have been rearranged and covered by dozens of artists over the years. Four students who were recently selected to represent JCJC in the Intercollegiate Jazz Band at Hinds County Community, Kiyah Hillman – Baritone Saxophone, Joseph Welch – Piano, Miles Dennis – Guitar, and Dustin Logan – Bass) will utilize some of the tips received from worldwide jazz clinician and JCJC alumnus, Bart Marantz.
Dr. Jonathan Jung, faculty piano and organ instructor will accompany JC Voices, who will be singing a variety of old and new favorites this year, including Orange Colored Sky, My Favorite Things, Teach Your Children, and others, plus selections highlighting the men and the women, Stuff Like that There, and Sound of Silence. Student soloists will also be featured in both of the JC Jazz Cats and JC Voices performances.
Java & Jazz promises to be a lively evening with coffee and light refreshments along with jazz of all styles. The concert is free and open to the public. For more information call the JCJC Fine Arts Department at 601-477-4094.
