Hattiesburg baseball improves to 17-7

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Hattiesburg High baseball enjoyed an undefeated Saturday at the Laurel Tournament.

After the Tigers shutout Bogue Chitto 11-0 in an early-afternoon contest, they beat Laurel 12-6 to wrap up the day.

Hattiesburg junior Joe Gray kicked off a five-run fourth inning for the Tigers with a 2-RBI single.

Later in the frame, junior Letrelle Johnson belted a two-run double into deep left. Hattiesburg High led 12-1 after four innings.

Laurel cut into the Tigers' lead thanks in part to junior Jaquan Johnikin's home run in the fifth.

Ultimately, Hattiesburg would win 12-6, improving to 17-7 overall.

"The district is still up in the air and we can finish first or we could finish second," said Hattiesburg head coach Joe Hartfield. "Either way, the ultimate goal is to still get back to Jackson and that's what our focus is right now."
