No. 17 Southern Miss responded to Tuesday's 12-inning loss to Ole Miss with a 15-4 defeat of FIU on Friday at Pete Taylor Park.

USM freshman Matt Wallner, named to D1Baseball.com's midseason all-american team on Thursday, led off the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning.

Wallner's Conference USA-leading tenth homer of the year came on his only swing of the at-bat.

With the bases loaded, Wallner kickstarted USM's five-run third inning with a sharp grounder down the right baseline, ending up as a three-run triple.

Junior outfielder Mason Irby added another three RBIs for the Golden Eagles, going 4-6 at the plate. Dylan Burdeaux, Daniel Keating and LeeMarcus Boyd also had multi-hit games for Southern Miss.

Junior Kirk McCarty earned the win (5-2) with six strikeouts, six hits and four earned runs in seven innings on the mound.

USM (25-6, 9-1 C-USA) hosts FIU in game two of the series on Saturday at 2:00.
