New author, illustrator awards presented at 50th USM Children's Book Fest

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Outstanding new authors and illustrators were recognized Thursday during the second day of the 50th annual Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Jeri Watts, author of "A Piece of Home," won the 2017 Ezra Jack Keats Award for new writer, while Micha Archer won the same award as new illustrator for, "Daniel Finds a Poem."

Those and others awards were presented during a luncheon at the Thad Cochran Center.

The festival concludes Friday.

    Following a school-record 55 wins and run that ended in an 8-7 loss in the NJCAA national championship, Jones County Junior College softball is eager to open the 2018 season on February 3. Coming that close to the school’s first national title serves as motivation enough for the Lady Bobcats. Regardless, expectations are always high for coach Chris Robinson’s teams – JCJC is a combined 105-12 the last two seasons.
