HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
An acclaimed children's book author met some of her biggest fans during the first day of an annual book festival at the University of Southern Mississippi.
Kate DiCamillo spoke to hundreds of elementary school children at Bennett auditorium Wednesday, as part of the 50th Fay B. Kaigler Children's Book Festival.
DiCamillo also answered questions from the students and signed copies of her book, "The Tale of Despereaux."
"I'm a super shy person, so I always think I'd prefer not to, when I have to step out on a stage," said DiCamillo. "But then, it is like such a gift to interact with those kids. I find that it's necessary and I keep forgetting that."
DiCamillo is also the recipient of the festival's Medallion award.
