Forrest County approves FEMA 361 Safe Room project

FORREST COUNTY (WDAM) - The Forrest County Board of Supervisors began the request for reimbursement of a $12 million project.
The project is known as the FEMA 361 Safe Room Project and will build FEMA-approved tornado shelters at 12 different schools in the county, including Petal schools.
The shelter will be big enough to hold all the faculty and students when a bad weather emergency approaches.
Forrest County school officials said the grant is the only way this is possible.
FEMA is covering 90 percent of the costs for the nearly $12 million project.
"What a great day it'll be when kids are in school, and bad weather comes and they have a safe place to go instead of trying to bus them home early or trying to put them in the hallway or their parents trying to go through bad weather," said David Hogan, Forrest Co. Board of Supervisors president.
The project is expected to begin as early as this summer.
