HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The month of April is Child Abuse Prevention month, and one local Hub City organization is doing their part to bring awareness to the issue.

The Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center is working to plant a dozen different pinwheel gardens in the Pine Belt. Each of the gardens are sponsored by a community organization or business according to Kids Hub Executive Director, DiDi Ellis.

“To create some community awareness, we have planted several different pinwheel gardens throughout the community, we’ve got 12 locations that you will see all throughout Hattiesburg and some in Columbia,” said Ellis. “Our goal is to provide community awareness about child abuse and the fact that April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month.”

Ellis said the project is also to highlight and honor the kids that have been through the program.

“But also to highlight and honor the children that have come through our doors at Kids Hub, so there’s 368 pinwheels at each location, there’s 366 blue ones that recognize and honor a child that has made it through the doors of Kids Hub for services, and then there’s two colorful pinwheels that represent the two that didn’t make it that far,” said Ellis.

Some of the businesses and organizations involved are:

Exchange Club, Mac’s Construction, Pine Belt Ford, First United Methodist Church, Vitamins Plus, Material Girls, Chef Katie Dixon, Glory Bound, The School of Social Work, and Porter Law Firm.
