JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - April is Child Abuse Prevention month, and members of Jones County Child Protection Services and Law Enforcement marked the event.
It is a time for people across the country to come together and raise awareness about child abuse and neglect and how to prevent it.
Laurel Mayor Johnny Magee delivered a proclamation to CPS.
"Awareness and education is going to be one of the most critical keys in preventing child abuse here in Jones County," said Brunette Jones, CPS regional supervisor. "Over the past year, we've received approximately 700 to 800 reports or referrals of child abuse. If they suspect that a child is being abused or neglected, to report that to our agency and so that our agency can get involved to find ways to help decrease those issues."
Officials from Laurel, Ellisville and Jones County attended the ceremony, which ended with a balloon release.
