USM offense may look different with new QB in 2017

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Shannon Dawson enters his second season as the Southern Miss offensive coordinator.

Last year, he had the luxury of working with the school's all-time leading passer Nick Mullens.

This spring, Dawson's teaching his playbook to quarterbacks Keon Howard and Kwadra Griggs while also evaluating the two for USM's starting job under center.

With a new signal-caller leading the Golden Eagles in 2017, Dawson said the offense may look slightly different than a season ago.

"It's not like the offense really changes play wise, I think it looks different based on who's out there," Dawson said. "We're probably going to move the pocket and do some things that we didn't do a whole lot of last year. But obviously, I think when you have a quarterback with a certain skill set you want to emphasis whatever part of your playbook he can do best. Well, I'm dealing with a whole different skill set now. Not that the offense changes any but maybe the focus of what we're doing changes a little."
