GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

Abundant sunshine welcomed thousands of visitors on opening day of the Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration South in Gulfport.

Students made up a good portion of the early crowd. They enjoyed interactive military exhibits and hands-on learning at various education booths.

Event chairman George Schloegel was all smiles as he welcomed visitors to this "party of the century."

Schedule: Mississippi Bicentennial Celebration South

Gov. Phil Bryant and U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker were among the speakers at a late morning event celebrating the release of a new stamp that recognizes the Mississippi statehood anniversary.

The stamp features a tight shot of weathered hands playing a guitar; an homage to the birth of so much different music in the Magnolia State.

Visitors didn't go hungry or thirsty. Among the many vendors are some featuring the finest food and drink Mississippi has to offer.
