HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The University of Southern Mississippi’s Valentina Haupt and Derick Kelting were honored Wednesday as Conference USA Women’s Golfer of the Week and Men’s Golfer of the Week, respectively.

Haupt, a sophomore from Santiago, Chile, shot a career-best, three-round 217 at the Henssler Financial Intercollegiate at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Haupt finished sixth individually in a field that included six collegiate golfers ranked in the top 100. It was her second top-10 finish of the season and sixth top 10 of her career.

Haupt’s 71 in the final round tied for the second-best score of the day, and she tied for third in the field by averaging par on the course’s par-4 holes. Of the 54 holes played, Haupt managed 37 pars and eight birdies.

The weekly honor was the first in Haupt’s career and the second for a Lady Eagle this year (Kelly Erasmus, Oct. 12).

Kelting, a sophomore from Amarillo, Texas, shot a 1-over-par 217 in the three-round Florida Atlantic University Slomin Autism Invitational in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, Kelting posted a pair of under-par rounds, including a final-round, 4-under-par-68.

The 68 tied his career-low round, and helped him finish a career-best fourth. Kelting’s efforts helped the Golden Eagles finish fourth in the 13-team field.

Kelting was tied for fourth with 13 birdies among the field’s 74 players, and his 6-under-par play on the course’s par-holes was tied for fifth-best among the field.

It was Kelting’s first C-USA weekly honor and the first for a Golden Eagle since Casey Fernandez (April 8, 2015).

It didn’t take long for Nick Sandlin to capture another award following his return to the mound for USM. The junior was named Conference USA pitcher of the week and a Collegiate Baseball player of the week for the third time this season. Sandlin pitched 12 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in five innings of USM’s 8-0 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Junior Adam Jackson is expected to take the mound on Tuesday night when the Golden Eagles host South Alabama.

Though soft-spoken, Steven Anderson hits hard. A "violent" runner as Southern Miss teammate Keon Howard describes him, perhaps Anderson is making up for all those years spent at quarterback. "Steven runs like he doesn't want to be hit no more,” Howard said.
