New firefighters join HFD after academy graduation

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Ten new firefighters are joining the ranks of the Hattiesburg Fire Department.

They graduated Friday afternoon from HFD's Recruit Class 1601.

They took part in a 12-week academy.

Each firefighter received their badge from chief Paul Presley and took their oath from Mayor Johnny Dupree.

Friday's graduation brings the total number of certified firefighters to 101.

The department is budgeted for about 115.

"It will take a few months for them to get comfortable, but I'm very proud of the fact that we got ten good guys, kind of like the previous class a year ago," said Presley. "That seems to be the magic number."

Presley said a date for a new academy has not been set yet.
