HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Toby Barker opened his campaign headquarters in the Hub City Thursday, vying to be the next mayor of Hattiesburg.

Barker, a current state representative, is running as an independent. Shawn O'Hara is also running as an independent.

Incumbent Mayor Johnny DuPree, Catherine Starr and Tom Garmon face off for the democratic nomination.

"People generally have two feelings," Barker said. "They believe in our city's potential, they believe that we have a lot of talented people who can do a lot of great things. They do have concerns about the challenges that we face, whether it's an education or whether it's in infrastructure, and we are here to run a positive campaign and to bring about positive change in our city, and we are excited about what the future holds."

Barker added, "We've opened our campaign office, and we had dozens of volunteers come through every day. With well over 100 folks that are on the ground in the neighborhoods. I've been coming back from Jackson every day to knock on doors as well. We're excited about what's going on, and we anticipate that momentum is only going to get stronger."
Barker's headquarters is located on Hardy Street across from T-Bones Records & Cafe.
