LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - The Laurel City Council approved a sewage rate increase, which will cost residents an extra 88 cents a month.
Mayor Johnny Magee said the 3-percent increase is needed to secure bonds that will help the city repair its aging infrastructure.
"We've got water lines that are extremely old," he said. "We've got sewer lines that are extremely old. And you have to pay for it out of the public utility fund. That's the only place you can get the money from, is the user."
The city council has not said when that increase will go into effect.
