HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Sacred Heart School Mock Trial Team has won the state competition eight of the past nine years.
the team appeared before the Forrest County Board of Supervisors asking them for their support for an upcoming national event in Connecticut.
The team recently took home its eighth state championship title. The win qualified the team to enter the National Mock Trial Championships, where they will compete with teams from around the country and the world.
The competition tests the ability of students to role play attorneys and witnesses in a case.
The team is trying to raise nearly $12,000 to pay for airfare and hotel fees. Members of the team have also started a GoFundMe page
"After the regional and state competition, we worked our hearts out and ready to work some more," said Sarah Berry Pierce, a junior at SHS. "And probably bring home a trophy, if we can."
Madison Alliston, a junior at SHS, said, "Overall, it's just been great. Each year I've made more and more memories. My favorite part actually is meeting all of the other competitors because we've met people from all over the world."
The board voted to donate to the students $1,500 to help in their efforts for travel expenses
