GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The people who drive on East Taylor Rd. in Gulfport are breathing a sigh of relief. Their morning and evening commutes will soon be much safer. That's because a new traffic signal will soon be installed. This comes after years of lobbying to get one and dozens of accidents at the intersection of Cowan-Lorraine Rd.

Word spread quickly that the intersection will soon have a new traffic light, just like the one right up the road to the north. At The Pecan House, Sandy Dearman could hardly contain her joy.

“I am so thankful to hear that. There have been so many accidents up here, and we just need something so we can have our people come to the store, and I can tell them turn at the stop light,” Dearman said.

Other business employees who work at this shopping plaza feel the same way. One of them is Caley Grimstead.

“I think it's going to be great for the community. It will help to lower down the wrecks and the accidents that do happen there. It will make traffic flow smoother,” said Grimstead.

Michael Hoang will soon be able to pay more attention to his customers rather than traffic.

“That's a really good thing, because every time my clients would leave the shopping center, I fear that they might get in an accident right there. So, it's a very good thing that we're having that light put in,” Hoang said.

Drivers who play a vehicular game of cat and mouse every day here are just as pleased. Anthony Crump is one of them.

“I think it's a very good idea for a light, because people trying to get out of this intersection right here have a little trouble getting out, because traffic doesn't slow down at all, because people are moving in and out,” Crump explained.

With even more businesses being built and more traffic on the way, this news could not have come at a better time for Bradley.

“It’s great to decrease any kind of danger trying to get in and out of here every night for all of these businesses, because it's growing out here so much. I think that's great. It's good news,” said Bradley.

The bid to begin work installing the traffic signal was awarded Friday to Weaver Electric at a cost of $17,000. City officials hope the light will be operating within 30 days.
