LPD warns of IRS phone scam

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - This is a press release from the Laurel Police Department.

The Laurel Police Department would like to warn the public of a scam currently being attempted in our area.

An unknown caller identifies himself as an employee of the Internal Revenue Service and states that the citizen receiving the call owes the IRS money.

The caller goes on to state that the local police will arrest the citizen unless payment is received. The caller attempts to get the citizen to make a payment via wire transfer, debit card or prepaid credit card.

The caller may also attempt to gain personal information such as date of birth, social security number and bank account numbers.

The IRS does not do business in this manner and the public is advised to ignore these requests.

The IRS has a page dedicated to these scams on their website. As the tax deadline approaches, LPD has received several reports of attempts in our area. For further information call LPD.  As always, any persons with information about criminal activity may contact LPD or Crime Stoppers at 601-428-STOP.
