Two-vehicle accident leaves one critically injured in Jones Co.

JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - This is a news release from the Jones County Fire Council.

A mysterious two vehicle accident occurred late Wednesday night on Highway 84 West. At around 11:45 p.m., Hebron and Pleasant Ridge quickly responded to what was reported to be a one vehicle rollover with unknown injuries. While en route to the scene, units were advised that a second vehicle had also rolled over but it was unclear if the two accidents were related at the time.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found a white pickup truck lying on its roof in the middle of the highway, blocking both westbound lanes. Several yards East of the white truck, also on the westbound side, they found a black pickup truck with extensive damage to its driver's side that had also apparently rolled over; the black truck was sitting upright several feet from the road in the front yard of a home.

The driver of the white truck appeared to be uninjured and refused transport to the hospital. The driver of the black truck sustained serious injuries and was initially transported by EMServ ambulance to South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel for treatment; he was then transported to Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg for emergency surgery.

According to firefighters on scene, the witness who initially called 911 did so in reference to the white truck rolling over, but was not aware of an additional vehicle that was involved until police officers arrived on scene. The witness also aided the driver of the white truck by helping him exit the inverted vehicle.

Both Hebron and Pleasant Ridge volunteers arrived quickly to the scene and performed a fast extrication using hydraulic power tools to free the driver of the black pickup truck who was trapped inside his vehicle.

The total shutdown of the westbound lanes halted traffic for two hours, but volunteers on scene did a great job of maintaining the situation to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Although the exact cause of the accident is unknown, it was concluded that the two vehicles were involved in the same accident.

Emergency personnel on scene included Hebron and Pleasant Ridge Volunteer Fire Departments, EMServ Ambulance Service, Jones County Sheriff's Department, Jones County Fire Public Information Officer Caleb Worrell and Mississippi Highway Patrol. Mississippi Department of Transportation was also called to the scene to apply sand to the roadway due to extensive oil and other liquid spillage.
