HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

Author and Republican pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson will discuss her insights on the intersection of the millennial generation and American political culture at the next University of Southern Mississippi University Forum.

Her presentation, titled “The Selfie Vote: Millennials and the Republican Party” will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21 at Bennett Auditorium on the Hattiesburg campus and will examine how cultural factors, shifts in demographics and the rapid advance of technology shape a new generation of voters. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Anderson, a former resident fellow at the Harvard Institute of Politics, is highly sought and respected for her political analysis by media and corporate and public leaders. A columnist for the Washington Examiner, she is a regular contributor for ABC News and shows on many other media outlets. Her book, The Selfie Vote: Where Millennials are Leading America (And How Republicans Can Keep Up) includes her thoughts on how Republican Party leaders can attract younger voters.

“The 2016 election brought about a seismic shift in American politics, but it is not certain the coalition that made Donald Trump president will have staying power. That will depend on how young, Republican voters view the Trump administration and how they vote in 2020,” said Dr. Andrew Haley, director of University Forum. “No one offers more insight into what millennial voters are thinking than Kristen Soltis Anderson. She is the expert when it comes to understanding young, conservative voters.”

Anderson is co-founder and pollster for the research and analytics firm Echelon Insights and co-host of the weekly bipartisan podcast The Pollsters. She was named one of Time magazine’s “30 Under 30 Changing the World” and featured as one of Elle magazine’s “Most Compelling Women in Washington” in 2016.

University Forum is presented by the Southern Miss Honors College. For more information on this event, email forum@usm.edu; to learn more about University Forum and its 2016-2017 schedule, visit https://www.usm.edu/honors/university-forum.

It didn’t take long for Nick Sandlin to capture another award following his return to the mound for USM. The junior was named Conference USA pitcher of the week and a Collegiate Baseball player of the week for the third time this season. Sandlin pitched 12 strikeouts and allowed just one hit in five innings of USM’s 8-0 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday. Junior Adam Jackson is expected to take the mound on Tuesday night when the Golden Eagles host South Alabama.

Though soft-spoken, Steven Anderson hits hard. A "violent" runner as Southern Miss teammate Keon Howard describes him, perhaps Anderson is making up for all those years spent at quarterback. "Steven runs like he doesn't want to be hit no more,” Howard said.
