PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Petal is named the safest city in Mississippi for 2017.

This is from data from the National Council for Home Safety and Security and crime reports collected by the FBI for the first six months of 2016.

Cities with over 5,000 residents were ranked by the number of reported violent crimes and property crimes.

Petal police credit their ranking to their involvement with the community.

"I truly believe in community policing, getting out of the car, you know going in and talking to business owners, getting out and talking with residents that may be working in their yards, or something like that, getting to know the kids at school and just being part of the community,” Petal Police Chief Leonard Fuller said.

Two other cities in our area also made the list. Laurel placed 18th and Hattiesburg came in 21st.
