HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A city of Hattiesburg court clerk was arrested and charged with felony credit card fraud.
Morgan Owens, 26, was arrested and charged with one felony count of credit card fraud on Monday by the Hattiesburg Police Department.
According to court personnel, Owens is accused of using a citizen's credit card information to pay a personal bill. The customer's card was originally intended to pay a city fine.
"The incident did happen while she was on the job," Hattiesburg Police Chief Anthony Parker said. "It was an internal matter that came to our attention, and it's being handled as an internal investigation."
The matter is being handled through the Forrest County Justice Court system, and Owens' bond was set at $2,500 during her initial appearance before Judge Gay Polk-Payton Monday.
WDAM 7 News reached out to Judge Jerry Evans, who is over the court clerks, and he declined to comment on the matter.
"We take all allegations seriously," Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree said. "When the allegations were made, our police department conducted an investigation which resulted in her being charged."
DuPree added that she is currently on administrative leave without pay pending the outcome.
