HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - A Hattiesburg High School debate coach has received national recognition.
Scott Waldrop of Hattiesburg received a third diamond award for professional career of excellence and longevity in speech and debate, according to a news release from the National Speech and Debate Association.
Waldrop is the only coach in the nation to have had two students named the National Speech and Debate Association Student of the Year, according to a news release on HPSD's website. He is also the only coach in Mississippi to have had a team receive the National Speech and Debate Association School of Excellence Award, and his program has received it three out of the last five years.
His teams have won Mississippi titles twelve 12 out of the last fifteen 15 years in Mississippi Speech and Debate.
Waldrop will be recognized at the world's largest academic competition, the National Speech & Debate Tournament, in Birmingham Alabama in June.
