Hub City man sentenced to prison in 2016 assault, robbery

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Hub City man has been sentenced to prison for his role in a 2016 fight and robbery that left one person injured.

Artavias McGowan, 26, pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and robbery in Forrest County Circuit Court Friday. McGowan was sentenced to 20 years to serve, with five years post-release supervision.

McGowan was arrested Sept. 30, 2016, in connection to the incident and indicted in December 2016.

“On Sept. 17, 2016, Artavis McGowan, did unlawfully, feloniously, willfully and purposely, cause serious bodily injury to victim (redacted), by hitting and striking victim (redacted) in the head and face and causing broken bones and fractures to his face,” according to the indictment.

The indictment continues, “On Sept. 17, 2016, Artavis McGowan, did willfully, unlawfully, and feloniously take, steal and carry away the personal property of victim(redacted) to-wit: an Apple iPhone, from the person and/or presence of the victim(redacted) against his will."

McGowan will be turned over to the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
