Gym memberships on the rise around New Year's

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

With the New Year’s just around the corner, many resolutions include joining a local gym.

Planet Fitness opened about two weeks ago in Hattiesburg and is just one of the gyms in the area where one can sign up and get involved in a starter program.

"Well in the health and fitness industry, New Year’s is like our Black Friday,” said Andrew Zornes, general manager of Planet Fitness in Hattiesburg. “That's when we expect to see the big crowds and we always do. Most people seem to find that it's just a great time of year to start fresh and start over with those fitness goals. So, it's really neat to see as people make progress and become healthier."

Weight loss goals can be a lifestyle change for many New Year’s gymgoers.

Zornes encouraged folks who have not been to the gym in a long time to consult with a physician before starting a fitness regimen, especially if they have had any health issues in the past.

    The Mississippi Attorney General has joined a lawsuit against the Federal Communications Commission's rollback of net neutrality. Attorney General Jim Hood's office announced the filing of a petition to formally begin the lawsuit in a Friday press release.  Hood will join 22 other attorney generals in filing the petition for review in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C.
