JONES COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

This is a press release from the Jones County Fire Council.

Jones County residents are reminded that properly indicating the address of your home at the end of your driveway near the street is imperative for emergency vehicles to quickly and safely locate your property.

Whether emergency personnel are responding to a medical emergency or a structure fire, having proper placement of clearly identifying address numbers can be the difference in the outcome of the situation.

In many areas of Jones County, a GPS does not provide accurate directions to an emergency scene and can lead firefighters to the wrong house address. As a result, firefighters and Emergency Medical Responders rely on proper and visible placement of home addresses.

Most often, house numbers can be found on a mailbox located at the end of the home's driveway. Over time, these numbers become worn due to weather and begin to fall off or disappear completely. Do us a favor by fixing these issues immediately so that in the event of an emergency situation at your home, emergency services can locate you quickly and efficiently.

When placing numbers on your mailbox, be sure to place the house numbers on both sides of the box, so that emergency personnel can see your house number from either direction. Also, use large numbers if possible to aid in this process.

If you do not have a mailbox at the end of your driveway, take the time to erect a piece of wood, such as a fence picket, in an area that is free of shrubbery or other obstructions, and clearly place your house numbers on both sides.

Some of the Jones County Volunteer Fire Departments, such as Glade VFD, also sell house number signs and will install them for $20. The aluminum signs are green, which makes visibility easy for responding units, with reflective numbers on both sides. Please contact your local volunteer fire department or water department to find out if these signs are available in your area.

If your house has a mailbox or other object that has clearly identifiable address numbers but is blocked by shrubs or obstructions, please remove these obstructions to the best of your ability to enable better visibility for responding emergency personnel.

Visibility of home addresses and house numbers is absolutely imperative to the quick and efficient response from our emergency services during the time of greatest need and can make the absolute difference in the outcome of your situation.

Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
