JASPER COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Jasper County officials have one man in custody on drug charges after conducting a checkpoint Friday night.

Lt. Jeremy Pinson , Deputy Kirk Thornton, Deputy Coty Blakeney and Deputy Marcus Arrington were conducting a safety checkpoint on Highway 11 near Stafford Springs in Heidelberg around 9:15 p.m.

During the checkpoint, officials observed a red Dodge truck that slammed on its brakes in the middle of the highway just before the checkpoint. Due to the suspicious activity, Thornton and Blakeney approached the vehicle and made contact with the driver, whom was identified as Delreco Shrod Strickland from Pachuta.

While speaking to Strickland the officers could smell what seemed to be a strong odor of marijuana emitting from inside the vehicle. The Deputies also noticed a small amount marijuana in the vehicle along with a glass Mason jar that contained what appeared to be marijuana residue.

After further investigation officials recovered another glass Mason jar that Strickland threw out of the passenger side window of his vehicle. The jar contained a large amount of what appeared to be marijuana. Deputies also recovered $1,530 in cash.

Narcotic Investigators recovered and seized the narcotic and the money from Strickland. He was charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance with the Intent to Distribute and Driving While License Suspended. He is currently being held at the Jasper County Jail. Judge Marvin Jones set bail at $30,500.
