PERRY COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

A few kids in Perry County will have a Merry Christmas this year, and it is thanks to a caring community and some compassionate law enforcement officers.

Kids made their way through the aisles of Fred's Super Dollar Store in Richton Thursday during the first "Shop with a Cop" program in the county.

Each child was escorted by members of law enforcement who helped each of the children pick out $300 worth of clothing and toys.

"It means a whole lot, it does good, it does us good, it also brings a relationship between the cops and the children to let them know that we're not here as bad guys,” Perry County Sheriff Mitch Nobles said. “We're here to help them and so it helps out a lot of families that are in need, especially the children, you know, pick out what they want and get things that they normally probably wouldn't been able to afford at home, it's just making everything good for the kids, making them happy, seeing the smiles on their face.”

The officers participating in the event were from New Augusta, Beaumont, Richton and the Perry County Sheriff's Department.
