HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg Public School District named its Administrator of the Year Tuesday.

Students and staff gave the longtime educator Donna Scott a big surprise as she walked into the classroom.

"This is about my school Rowan Elementary, my boys and girls that are here, my teachers, my TA's, my custodians, the cafeteria workers, everyone that is involved, the tutors they are all, what goes into making Rowan what it is,” Scott said. "I'm elated that they through this surprise for me. It makes me feel that they do care about their administrators and their students and I am excited about the whole surprise.”

Scott is the principal at Rowan Elementary, and she started her career in 1999 at N.R. Burger Middle School

She later went to another school district and returned with the Hattiesburg Public School District in 2010.

This is the second time Scott has won the Administrator of the Year award.

The last time was in 2013 as the principal at Hawkins Elementary when it received the "Gold Ribbon Champion of Change" award by the Mississippi Department of Education.

”Ms. Scott, she demonstrates something that they do not teach in the classroom and that they do not write in the textbook. Once Ms. Scott enters the room the positivity just automatically increases,” HPSD Superintendent Robert Williams said.

Scott is a Hattiesburg native and married to her former classmate, Howard Scott.

Currently, Lumberton High School senior safety C.K. Bowens acts as a de facto coach-on-the-field for Coach Zach Jones’ defense. And if Jones’ has his way, Bowens will become a coach on his staff some day in the future. “Somebody’s fired,” Jones said only half-kidding. “He has a job because I would hire him in a minute. He just has a way of getting his point across and people listen. He’s just a natural leader.”
