PINE BELT (WDAM) -

The deadline for the Obamacare open enrollment is approaching fast.

One has until Thursday to sign up for healthcare coverage or to renew existing plans. Officials tell us if you miss Thursday's deadline you could see a gap in coverage at the beginning of next year.

"So it's really important for individuals once again who don't want to have a lapse in coverage,” said Kristina Cole, MHAC healthcare access specialist. “If they know their coverage is ending December 31st, individuals who had market coverage last year and who need to renew coverage, they really want to do that by December 15th.”

There is a penalty if you fail to enroll in a health care plan, and the penalty goes up each year.
