LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Some Jones County firefighters are making Christmas a happier time for some less fortunate children.
Volunteers with Calhoun Fire Department treated a half-dozen needy kids to a day in their honor Saturday, as part of the second annual "Shop with a Firefighter."
First, they gave the kids a limousine ride from the fire hall to Walmart.
Then, they took them on a shopping spree for toys and clothes.
Funds for the event were raised during a softball tournament held last September.
"We know there are a lot of people struggling right now, during this time of the year, so we're able to come in and help with some families that aren't going to have a Christmas that they'll remember and now they will," said Kelly Parker, coordinator for the event. "It makes us proud to represent our district."
"It helps out a lot of families and we appreciate it more than they'll ever know," said Ashley Hilbun. She has two children who were taken on the shopping spree. "They're doing an awesome job as far as the teamwork effort and we do appreciate them."
The children were also treated to lunch and an afternoon at Zoofari at the mall.
