The following is a news release from Jones County Junior College

Paintings from the Mississippi Art Colony are on display at the Eula Bass Lewis Art Gallery on the Jones County Junior College campus. This traveling exhibit features artists who participated in the fall’s gathering. Their works have been selected by the guest artist, Angus Macpherson, an artist from Albuquerque, New Mexico, who was in residence at the Colony. Macpherson is known for using vivid landscapes and an “out-of-this-world” palette.

“There are various types of artwork on display, ranging from oil paintings featuring scenery to acrylics featuring people. There is even some 3-D art on display,” said JCJC art instructor, Mark Brown.  “There is a wide range of art and subject matter.”

Macpherson chose works by many talented artists for a show that will travel from JCJC on to other locations across the state.   The awards given to artists in the Colony under Macpherson’s tutelage include Andrea Kostyal, for “Cafe du Monde,” (First Place), Billie Bourgeois,  “Fuzzy Beast with Dolls and Flowers,” (Second Place), Susie Ranager, “Crowd Control,” (Third Place), Patt Odom,  “Sister Series,” (Becky Feder Award) and Susie Ranager,  recipient of the Alex and Jean Loeb Peer Award.

The Mississippi Art Colony was founded in 1948 and has nurtured such artists as Walter Anderson, Marie Hull and George Ohr. The Smithsonian lists the Colony as the country’s oldest artist-run organization of its kind, having been established in the 1940’s (www.msartcolony.net).

The show will remain in the gallery until December 15, 2016. For more information about the JCJC art show contact the gallery at 601-477-4148 or visit the gallery which is open Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.  The gallery is closed for lunch daily from 11:30 until noon.
