STARKVILLE, MS (WDAM) - Three Poplarville High School turnovers led to three Lafayette High School touchdowns, as the Commodores claimed the state football championship Saturday evening with a 27-12 victory in the Class 4A Mississippi high school title game.
Brandon Turnage stepped in front of a lateral on an attempted "hook-and-ladder" play near the end of the first half by Poplarville and returned it 65 yards for a touchdown.
Jamarcus Quarles capped a 30-yard drive set up by an interception in the second quarter with a 20-yard scoring run, and Jamie Shaw went 24 yards for a touchdown to end a 48-yard drive that was set up by a fumble recovery in the third quarter.
Lafayette (13-2), which tore off 13 consecutive wins after dropping its first two games, jumped out to a 7-0 lead when Will Ard connected with Tyler Carmichael-Williams for a 77-yard touchdown pass on the Commodores' second offensive play of the game.
The Hornets (12-2), which lost for the first time in 13 games, got fourth-quarter touchdown runs from Jesse Pernell and Payten Graham.
In his final high school game, Pernell ran for a game-high 213 yards on 25 carries.
