Turnovers hurting Lumberton in title game

LUMBERTON, MS (WDAM) -

Hollandale Simmons High School turned two, first-quarter interceptions into 14 points, taking a 22-6 halftime lead over Lumberton High School this morning in the Class 1A state championship football game.

Simmons quarterback Chandler Robinson ran 4 yards for one touchdown and threw 19 yards to Amos Robinson for a second. Chandler Robinson also threw a pair of 2-point conversion passes, one each to Marquez Pam and Sumetris Stewart.

Pam also has a 1-yard touchdown run for the defending Class 1A state champions.

Lumberton scored first  for a 6-0 lead when Erron Joseph blocked Aaron Davis’ punt and Davion Edwards scooped up the loose ball and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.

Pam has 65 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries for Simmons, while Dre Coleman rushed for 58 yards on 13 carries for Lumberton in the first half.

Mississippi's High School Football Championships will air on WDAM 7 Bounce over-the-air on channel 7.3 and on Comcast on channel 216 Friday and Saturday at 11 a.m, 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

    Since the EF-3 tornado landed last year, William Carey University has spent the entire year working to rebuild their campus. “The feeling that we couldn't recover was pretty widespread but they didn't know our students, faculty and employees and our determination,” says President Dr. Tommy King. William Carey came from destruction to full restoration. Sophomore Cassidy Monk says, “The lord has just delivered us from such a tragic event..."

    The campus of William Carey was calm as the clock struck midnight and the date turned to January 21, 2017. Then-freshman soccer player Taylor Gautreaux turned in at about 1 a.m. She would be awoken two hours later to the sounds of a violent tornado just outside her dorm room wall.
