A fire was reported on the campus of The University of Southern Mississippi Tuesday afternoon.
Just before noon the Hattiesburg Fire Department responded to a report of smoke in the basement of the Theater and Dance building, according to Battalion Chief Stephen Mooney with HFD.
Mooney said the building was evacuated and an Eagle Alert was sent to all students.
Hattiesburg fire crews made entry to the basement of the building just after noon. While using air packs, they encountered smoke.
A second crew was sent in once a water source was established. A small fire was extinguished, but smoke was still visible.
A third crew entered to make a sweep of the entire building, and placed fans inside to filter out smoke.
While making the sweep, that crew found a second fire in the basement, and extinguished it.
The source of the fire was determined as leaves in a drainage system for the building that caught on fire by a cigarette.
Crews extinguished both fires, and flooded the storm drain system to take out any chances of a flame being reignited.
An all clear was given around 1:00 p.m., and no injuries were reported.
