LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

A Laurel organization that has been helping homeless pets for several years invited its two-legged friends over for a special visit Saturday afternoon.

Southern Cross Animal Rescue hosted its first-ever Open House at its Highway 184 shelter. Visitors met the dogs and cats that are waiting for their forever homes, while enjoying hamburgers, hot dogs and other activities.

"We just wanted to open up to the public, so they could see what we do, how we rescue, how donations are used, so they could come meet all the animals," said Anna Norris, a board member with Southern Cross Animal Rescue. "(The way the shelter) was set up before, people couldn't really interact, but now we're trying to make it so people can come and see all the animals we currently have."

The organization was founded about three-and-a-half years ago.
