PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Something warm and cuddly will soon join the array of crime-fighting equipment in the Petal Police Department cars.
A Petal Middle School student hosted a "Teddy bear" drive to comfort children in distress.
Anna Beeson is competing in Hattiesburg's Junior Miss program, and as part of the pageant, she was asked to lead a community service effort.
Officers can give the stuffed animals to children involved in traumatic situations.
Experts said the Teddy bears are comfort objects that can make a big difference.
"This is important because whenever children get separated from their families or they are going through tough times, they need something to make them feel safe or make them feel a little more at peace," Beeson said. "I hope that the police just use them to their full advantage and they really use them for these children to feel safe and for them to feel okay."
Beeson collected several dozen stuffed animals, and handed those over to the police Wednesday.
