HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Nearly 60 Junior ROTC cadets from Mississippi and Alabama competed for a unique title at Southern Miss Friday.

The inaugural event, called the JROTC STEM Invitational was meant to be fun and innovative with tasks to generate engineering ideas, problem solving skills and creative design using science, engineering, technology and math.

"STEM brings the relevance to the content that the kids are learning in school,” said Susan Pruet, STEMworks LLC consultant. “The math and science integrates it, they use it to solve problems. Problems that are important in industry. So, a lot of industry people are just very much in partnership with us because this is the farm team."
The JROTC students will also participate in the Military Appreciation activities at Saturday afternoon's Southern Miss football game vs. UNC-Charlotte.
