PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Most people have heard the National Anthem, but never like this.

Petal senior Matthew Hopkins gave a passionate performance of the National Anthem at a football game Thursday night.

A video uploaded to YouTube shows Hopkins at the center of the 50-yard-line with the members of the school's JROTC program.

Hopkins holds the hand of the saluting JROTC cadet throughout the entire song. The cadet never waivers as Hopkins rocks his head back and forth to the music. The cadet happens to be Hopkins' brother, Daniel. Daniel Hopkins was being recognized for senior night.

While Hopkins sings, the rest of the junior reserve officers display the flag proudly behind him.

The entire stadium is silent throughout Hopkin's rendition, but not for long. At the end of the song, the entire stadium burst into cheers.

Hopkins is a special needs student at Petal High, and he has a passion for singing.

Katie Charleville, Petal High’s special education director, said Hopkins loves everything from country to Christian music. In fact, Charleville said every time someone walks into the classroom, one can always find Hopkins singing.

Just this week, Hopkins’ mother posted a video of him singing on Facebook, and someone tagged Charleville in the post. She emailed the football coach about the video, and made the arrangements for him to sing at the game on Thursday evening.
