Southern Strike set to begin at Camp Shelby

CAMP SHELBY, MS (WDAM) -

The Mississippi Air National Guard will host Southern Strike 2017 at the Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center from Oct. 24 to Nov. 4, 2016.

Approximately 2,200 service members from both the active and reserve components of the military service will participate in the joint international combat exercise. Army, Navy, and Marine Special Operations forces will participate as well, according to a new release issued by the National Guard. 

Southern Strike will be a robust display of counterinsurgency, air supremacy, close air support, enroute casualty care, non-combatant evacuation, maritime and riverine Special Operations events.

More than 20 types of aircraft in the U.S. military inventory will participate with more than 300 sorties scheduled.

Portions of the 5th annual exercise will also take place at the Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center in Hattiesburg.

    The University of Southern Mississippi ended Saturday’s regular-season baseball finale at Marshall University the same way it started, with a bang. The 18th-ranked Golden Eagles sent 13 batters to the plate in both the second and ninth innings, scoring eight runs in each, as USM finished off a first-ever sweep of the Thundering Herd on its home turf with a 18-9 victory at Epling Stadium.
