HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The following is a news release from The University of Southern Mississippi

The University of Southern Mississippi School of Music presents two diverse events on Nov. 10. At 6 p.m., The Sax-Chamber Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Lawrence Gwozdz, presents a program featuring a mixture of transcribed and original works for saxophone orchestra. Then at 7:30 p.m., faculty artist Dr. Ben McIlwain presents “Off the Beaten Path,” a trombone recital with Dr. Ellen Elder on piano and special guests Dr. Richard Perry, tuba and The Southern Miss Select Trombone Octet with guest conductor, Dr. James Standland. Both events are free and will be performed in Marsh Auditorium on the Southern Miss Hattiesburg campus.

The Sax-Chamber Orchestra (SCO) program includes Johann Sebastian Bach:  Chorale "Wachet auf" (Sleepers Wake); Antonio Vivaldi:  Concerto "Alla Rustica;” Ronald Caravan:  Sinfonietta (1994); Walter Hartley: Serenade (1991); and Louis Vierne:  Final from Organ Symphonie No.1

"A special piece on this concert is our tribute to Walter Hartley, my friend and theory professor who passed away in June,” said Gwozdz. “His Serenade is one of over 100 pieces he composed for our instrument."

Because of the wide range of instruments and the musical colors available to the saxophone family, many compare the resulting sound of the SCO to an organ. It is particularly notable that they include the Organ Symphonie that mimics that magnificent sound.

"Of all the pieces on our program, I am looking forward to playing the Vierne Organ Symphonie, because I am reminded of organist Diane Bish playing this piece on her television show 'The Joy of Music' said Jarrod Colley, SCO bass saxophonist. “If you enjoy the sound of the ‘King of Instruments', you should come and hear us imitate that sound."

The faculty trombone recital, “Off the Beaten Path,” includes very diverse repertoire from renaissance and Baroque to jazz. The program includes:Three Medieval Dances for Alto Trombone as edited by Lindberg; Sang till Lotta by Sandstrom; Movement by Hidas; Morning Walk by Bolter; Devil's Waltz by Verhelst; and Special by Gabaye.

McIlwain noted, "I am looking forward to sharing the stage with some of my fantastic colleagues and students on a very diverse program of relatively unknown works for trombone - hence, the title of the recital ‘Off the Beaten Path.’”
