PINE BELT (WDAM) - October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, but awareness must be a year-round effort. Domestic violence impacts one in four women in the United States and costs tax payers billions of dollars every year.
This month reminds all of us that domestic violence is a tragedy that doesn't really receive the attention it truly deserves.
In 2015, Mississippi law enforcement officers responded to over 10-thousand domestic violence calls. Mississippi has dropped from the fifth highest in the nation to the 34th highest in the number of females murdered by a man since the start of the Attorney General's Domestic Violence Unit in December 2006.
Domestic violence shelters in Mississippi provided temporary housing and safety to over 2-thousand women, men and children and non-residential services to over 15-hundred.
In addition to awareness, it is very important that you and people you know understand where to seek help when someone is a victim. The National Domestic Hotline has been serving victims for the past 20 years.
Trained advocates are available 24/7 to talk confidentially with anyone who is experiencing domestic violence, seeking resources and information, or is questioning unhealthy aspects of a relationship.
If you or someone needs help call the hotline: 1-800-799-SAFE
Consider This: It's never OK to be violated in a relationship and it's never OK for anyone to ignore it.
