PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The city of Petal has seen a lot of growth recently, and with that growth, it has also seen a surplus in the city’s budget.

With $3.2 million in reserve, Petal is going to reinvest around $1 million in its road infrastructure. Plans are to resurface around 10 miles of roads throughout the city. Bidding for the project came in under budget at around $795,000.

Since the project was expected to cost around $1 million, and with the bidding coming in under that budget, it will allow for even more roads to be added to that list.

Petal Mayor Hal Marx said that as a steward of the people’s money, he wants to use it to the best of his ability.

“I just want to say to all the citizens of Petal that we try to use their tax money wisely and since we did have a good budget year, we’ve been able to save some money over the last few years,” Marx said. “Hopefully this is the first year of several years in a row that we’ll be able to do big street projects like this and some of these neighborhoods that have been neglected over the years, we can get their roads paved.”

There are around 100 miles of roads in the city of Petal, and this project will allow for the resurfacing of around 10 miles of roads throughout the city.

The project will not require any additional taxes for Petal residents, and work should begin by the end of November.

In the wake of the Florida school shooting, some people, including President Trump, say arming some school teachers might help keep children safe.  Others say it is a bad idea.   Either way, some local school administrators think a few school boards will likely consider it in the coming weeks.  "I've had several people who've asked about that and maybe made that suggestion, asked us to consider that," said Tommy Parker, superintendent of...
