PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

Some volunteers spent their "Make A Difference Day" in Petal Saturday, helping the city fix up a new recreation center.

They washed windows, cleaned cabinets and did landscaping at a former medical clinic on East Central Avenue, which will be the home of the new Petal Senior and Veterans Center.

The building was recently donated to the city by Merit Health-Wesley.

"The seniors had their own facility, but a deal was worked out where the city leased that facility to one of the 3-D schools, and the seniors had to end up sharing the space at the civic center and that space was kind of small," said Tom Hardges, director of recreation for the city of Petal.

"I'm very excited, because we've been waiting on this place a long time and it's going to be great and we're going to make it greater," said Ada V. Madison, a Petal resident whose looking forward to utilizing the new facility.

The city hopes the building will be ready for use by Christmas.

For a second consecutive football season, West Marion High School and Presbyterian Christian School will square off in the season-opening game for each school.
