Suspect leads deputies on chase in Lamar County

LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - A Wednesday night traffic stop in Lamar County turned into a chase and a brief manhunt for a fleeing suspect.

"Around 8 p.m. deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on a suspect for suspicion of driving under the influence," Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel said.

The suspect, who is not being identified at this time, led deputies on a roughly 10-mile chase and wrecked in the 400 block of Burnt Bridge Road.

"When he ran off the road and wrecked he jumped out and ran into the woods," Rigel said. "Deputies searched the woods in the area for a while, but were unable to locate the suspect."

According to Rigel, a warrant is being issued for the suspect and it will be signed by the judge.

Rigel added that he will be charged with felony eluding for the chase.
