LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - A 17-year-old Laurel High School student was killed, and an 18-year-old has been taken into custody and charged with murder, according to Laurel Police Chief Tyrone Stewart.
This is Laurel's first homicide of the year, according to Stewart.
Stewart said Mekel Antwon Crumbly was charged with the murder of Tamerick Drummond, and booked into the Jones County jail just after midnight.
Maurice Pruitt Sr., Tamerick's father, said Wednesday was his birthday, he just turned 17.
The Laurel School District released the following statement regarding the incident:
Lacey Slay, Public Information Officer for the Laurel School District, said grief counselors are coming in from all over the state to assist with students, and will be at the school at least through the end of the week.
