Woman injured in accident involving firetruck identified, highway clear for traffic

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Two accidents stalled highway traffic for hours near Paul B Johnson State Park.

Around noon all the northbound lanes of Highway 49 were blocked to motorists.

The first accident occurred near Carter Road, blocking one northbound lane. No one was injured in that accident, and it was almost done being cleared when the second accident occurred.

The second accident involved a Brooklyn Volunteer Engine One firetruck, according to Mississippi Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Brent Barfield.

Barfield said the truck was pulled over on the right-hand side of the road assisting with the first wreck when it was rear-ended by a 2008 Nissan Altima.

The Altima went off into the median. The driver of the Altima, Frannie Ray McCardle, 30, of Hattiesburg, was taken to the hospital with injuries, according to Barfield.

The extent of her injuries are unknown at this time.

The firetruck was also totaled, and towed from the scene.

Both northbound lanes of Highway 49 are now open to motorists.
